TIL there is such a word “mandamus”
"Mandamus" is a judicial remedy in the form of a court order that commands a public agency, a corporation, a court, an inferior governmental body, or an individual to perform a specific act that is mandated by law as part of their official duties. The term comes from the Latin for "we command."
This type of order is typically used when all other judicial remedies are ineffective and is often sought to compel a public authority to fulfill its obligation under the law. For example, it might be used to compel an administrative agency to take action or make a decision when it has failed to do so within a legally mandated time frame. Mandamus is not available to compel an authority to act in a way that the law leaves to their discretion, but only to compel them to perform their duty when they have a legal obligation to act.
