With #nostr #safebox, I now see the possibility of a decentralized secure alternative to a passport.
A passport is nothing special - it is simply a third-party attestation by a nation-state upheld by treaties. As the ‘rules-based order’ continues to disintegrate, we need to prepare ourselves for the possibilities of other third-party attestations.
What makes a passport ‘special’ is its document security and secure nfc chip, when verified, calls up the PKI authority list. That can be replaced by web of trust. As for biometrics, that can be easily replaced by storing a signed biometric digest from someone in your web of trust. If required, this biometric digest can be provided via #nostr #safebox and compared to a biometric captured during passage.
To conclude, I see a future when the privilege of passage is not longer in the sole domain of nation-states and the travel document, as we know it - the passport could be replaced by the likes of #nostr #safebox
